Gypsum plasterboard is a versatile and multifunctional material that has a number of positive qualities, due to which it is widely used in wall and ceiling decoration. It bends well when wetted with water, the sheets are easy to cut in any direction, which allows them to give almost any shape. Designers today bring to life many of the most diverse ideas for surface finishing using original and beautiful figures made of this material. In this article we will look at how to make a flower on the ceiling from drywall with your own hands.
Even in the absence of experience, this rather complex design can be made independently. It will not only look beautiful, decorating the room, but will also replace an ordinary chandelier, since fixtures can be easily integrated into drywall. This will create spectacular light changes that will look very original and stylish in a multi-level design.
Ceiling from plasterboard in the form of a flower
This design is a rather complicated decor, but it can transform the whole interior of the room and make it original and unique. A flower-shaped figure on a plasterboard ceiling is suitable for almost any room: a nursery, a bedroom, a living room.
When planning, choosing the size and shape of the structure, you must take into account the height of the room. If the ceilings are low enough, then doing a volumetric large-scale construction is undesirable. It will visually crush, hanging over your head, which will create inconvenience. But to completely abandon this idea is not worth it. In this case, you just need to reduce the size, making the figure less bulky.
The most impressive and beautiful look are large structures that have several levels, resulting in a three-dimensional look. But the room for this should have sufficiently high ceilings and a large area, otherwise the figure will not look very good.
If the room is no more than 2.3-2.5 meters high, then it is best to mount a flat structure with openwork execution. Curved petals also look good, the number of which depends on the area allotted for the flower.
If the ceiling in the room is not high, it is unreasonable to place volume elements there. The flower can simply be cut out of plasterboard and glued. In this case, you need to try to choose the original color scheme, thereby compensating for the lack of volume.
When choosing the shape of the flower on the plasterboard ceiling, you need to remember that in small rooms rounded petals look much better, like a rose or chamomile.
For spacious rooms with high ceilings, the best solution is flowers with a sharp shape on the end. In such rooms, any volumetric structures are suitable. A rose looks beautiful with several tiers of drywall or chamomile petals. For a children's room, you can choose a flower with a small number of petals.
Before you begin to manufacture the frame or give the front of work to specialists who will mount the jewelry, you should find a picture on the Web. You need to carefully study the shape of the flower yourself and show the plasterboard ceilings as a flower to the workers.
Creating the structure
The following steps must be performed sequentially:
- Find or develop your own sketch, which indicates the size of the structure. Artistic talent and spatial imagination are important here. You can even come up with your own version of the petals.
- Transfer the image to the plastered surface and the drywall base.
- Set the frame from the profile.
Creating a layout
Having chosen a suitable design, we begin to sketch the future flower on the plasterboard ceiling. All drawings and layouts are more convenient to draw on the floor.
The main part of almost any flower is the circle. But due to the large size, it is impossible to draw it with a compass. Therefore, it is worth applying a little trick - to tie a thread and a button to the pencil. Stick the button in the center of the circle, pull the rope and draw a smooth circle. If you have a suitable item at hand, you can use it as a stencil.
To create a rose you need complete three laps. Each of them should be exactly one third smaller in diameter than the previous one. Also, the edges of these three circles should have carved edges. Having created a drawing on paper, you need to transfer it to the ceiling surface.
Transfer the drawing to the ceiling
After creating the drawing on paper, you need to transfer it to the ceiling surface. Do this in several stages:
- A flower drawing is created on paper, observing the scale.
- If the place where the flower will be located has not yet been selected, it is drawn on paper and applied to ceiling pattern. Places where the figure looks best are marked. If you have a computer, this can be done in a special program. It’s much more convenient and faster.
- All this is transferred to the ceiling surface. If it was decided to make a rose, then you just need to draw the largest circle of the three that make up the flower. It is at this place that the installation will be carried out. If a flower of more complex shapes was chosen, its image can be transferred to the ceiling using a coordinate grid. Points are put in coordinates and connected by lines, thereby creating the outline of a future flower on a plasterboard ceiling.
Next, we’ll look at a few more ways to apply markup.
Application by hand
Very often, craftsmen make a sketch of a flower on the ceiling from drywall by hand. Needless to say, this requires the ability to properly hold a pencil and talent. Asymmetrical contours can be easily drawn with your own hands. Asymmetry is a fairly common technique in design. It all depends on the idea, desire and skills.
Marking with a projector
There is another new and progressive way - connecting the projector to a computer or laptop and directing it to the ceiling. Then the contours of the figure are outlined. This option is well suited for tall rooms, since it is quite difficult to project a silhouette in a room with low ceilings without distortion.
Mounting the frame
To make the foundation for the future flower of drywall on the ceiling, the photo of which is presented above, use the same materials that are used in the assembly of drywall constructions.
For create a shape with rounded edges odgotovit metal profile. It makes incisions and bends to the desired shape.
For work you will need:
- Galvanized profile: directing and rack-mount. To create curvilinear shapes, it is better to use arched, but if not, the usual one will do.
- "Fleas" for fastening metal parts, "crabs" and straight suspensions, press washers and dowel nails.
- Drywall sheets. Since parts of the flowers will have to be bent, it is advisable to purchase flexible material, but you can also use the usual wall.
- Tool kit: screwdriver, grinder, puncher and scissors for metal.
- For decoration: sickle, putty, paints of different colors (often make drywall ceilings in two colors or even more).
Assembling the frame for a flower
If a volumetric design is planned then guide profiles are initially mounted by use on the dowel-nails. In turn, rack profiles are fixed to them, which are cut to the desired size. This design is completed by a circular strapping made of a curved arched rail in the desired shape.
If there is no arched profile, you can use a conventional guide or rack. They are cut with metal scissors on them in the form of the Latin letter V. Then the rail is bent and mounted on the frame on press washers or "fleas".
These profiles are additionally mounted on direct suspensions. On the ceiling they are fixed with dowels. For rigidity of the frame at the intersection, the metal parts are fastened with “crabs.”
During the installation of the frame, wiring for lighting is also mounted. To fix the overall and heavy chandeliers or lamps, a special additional fastening is provided, which is held on the main floor. The result should be a sufficiently strong structure that can withstand significant weight.
Sheathing the structure with drywall
Drywall sheets are pre-marked on the floor, then cut along the contour with a stationery knife. Having cut drywall on both sides, the desired part is broken off, and then the edges are evened with a plane or the same blade.
Each element is alternately mounted on the base of the frame using black self-tapping screws 25 mm long. They are not pressed very hard into the surface so that they do not protrude beyond the cut of the cap and do not interfere with further decoration. Under the spotlights, holes are cut through where the wiring is brought out. The assembled drywall construction is being prepared for finishing.
Flat frameless flowers made of drywall on the ceiling with your own hands
As noted earlier, such products are used to decorate small rooms with low ceilings. First of all, they draw the desired flower on the drywall sheet according to the sketch. It is advisable to break it into separate parts: core and petals. Make markings on the ceiling, where the assembly will be carried out. Fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws.
If there is a suspended ceiling in the room, then it is necessary that the screws screw directly into the frame rails. All attachment points and connections are sealed with gypsum putty, the surface is leveled.
When assembling the structure from drywall, you should consider what kind of lighting. Fasteners are added for lighting, and holes will be required for spotlights.
Glue the joints with special paper tape or serpentine. Any of these materials is fixed by applying a thin layer of plaster mix. In addition, attachment points are smeared with a small amount of putty.
The edges of the figure are glued with plaster corners using a gypsum mixture. On bends apply an arched ordinary corner with cropped sides. The entire surface of the flower is primed and plastered.
After drying, apply decorative plaster, paint or other selected materials. So, we looked at how to make a drywall flower on the ceiling. To create a simple structure from such a material will not take too much time. Although this process is quite laborious, but not very complicated.
